6 Years Completed

Yesterday was the 6th anniversary of us arriving in Tenerife to live and work on this beautiful Island.  We celebrated last night at our local Cheers Bar with some of our fantastic friends.

It’s hard to believe it has been so long, it seems like last week and yet so much has happened during that time.  Like most ExPats over here we have had our ups and downs (so to speak), being ripped off occasionally (often by the people you would never expect!), struggling for (legal) work and generally trying to make ends meet so that we can stay.

Overall, we are really enjoying being here and have no plans to return to the UK as many other people we know are doing at the moment.  From what we hear there is not too much to return for anyway.

We arrived on the Island, as I say 6 years ago, 5 of us and a load of suitcases – yes we were well over the allotted 20 Kg each on that Friday, but a very helpful young man at Check In said he would ‘turn a blind eye’ when he found out we were moving here permanently.

All we had to promise was to buy him a beer if we ever met him in Tenerife … haven’t seen him yet though!

The very next day we were working in what was then known as Bens 2, now the Irish Rosein Puerto Colon.  Since then we have had a few different jobs in several different places, but always managed to find something to keep us ticking along.

Our eldest son decided that Tenerife was not for him and moved back to the UK after a while, he is now living in Brighton and although has visited us a few times seems to be settled over there now.

Our other son, found that he had a voice and is now entertaining the crowds (holiday makers and residents) in and around the South of Tenerife as ‘Simply Mo‘.  He can sing just about anything, and has only stopped in the middle of a song a couple of times where he had never heard of it before and had no idea what tune it was supposed to have!

He is currently working on a new Michael Jackson Tribute Show that should be ready during the 2nd week of September.  Some bars have already booked him in advance for what should be a terrific 45 minute slot for them.

Our daughter was only 7 years old back in 2003 and went straight into one of the local schools in Las Americas.  That was one of the best decisions we made, she is now fluent in Spanish (locals would argue, Canarian!) as well as her native English.  Starting the ‘High School’ in a few weeks she thoroughly enjoys life in the sun and has made some great friends, from all over the world.

Our lives would be empty without our animals, we started out with one cat, Stevie (after Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac fame) very soon after we arrived.  Stevie’s first Mum, Liz was returning to the UK and Stevie’s passport was not quite ready for her to travel at the same time, we agreed to look after her for those few weeks, however fell in love with her and managed to persuade Liz that we could adopt her.

Next along was a very thin Boxer dog, Oscar.  His story was a lot different, unfortunately his so called Mum and Dad returned to the UK to live and left Oscar on their Balcony here!  Luckily a good friend of ours, Ric (Freak Boutique) saw him and managed to rescue him.

Ric knew that we had Boxer dogs in the UK and phoned us to tell us about Oscar … we went home with him that same night and he is now a very handsome boy and very much a part of the family.

After that we adopted 2 tortugas (terrapins) that had been left in their tank without being cleaned for some considerable time, they were very listless and still quite small, but Cathy managed to save them and they are now two very healthy individuals.

Well you would expect that we should stop there wouldn’t you?  Mmm, not quite.

Cathy came back from a morning with one of the Animal Rescue Centres to advise that she had fallen in love with this beautiful little kitten …

“No, we have enough animals” was the immediate reaction, but then the photograph came out and, well, who could resist her?  Sasha arrived the next day and has been with us ever since!

So, two adults, one young lady, a dog, two cats and two tortugas in our home (Simply Mo moved out and now lives with his partner, Claire in his own place) and it is a great home now, in the centre of Los Cristianos as we start our 7th year and look forward to many more!
