World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day Logo on The Beach in TenerifeToday, November 14th is World Diabetes Day, and in previous years it would have probably passed me by relatively unnoticed.

Early this year however that all changed when I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and since then I have been trying to learn a lot about this condition.

Apparently World Diabetes Day takes place on 14 November every year and is an official United Nations World Day.  The date was chosen because it marks the birthday of Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, is credited with the discovery of insulin.

Each year has a theme and this year’s theme, in fact all the way through to 2013 is Diabetes Education and Prevention.

Diabetes - Obelisco Plaza Altamira Caracas VenezuelaThe World Diabetes Day logo is the blue circle – the global symbol for diabetes and over 800 famous monuments are going to light in the colour of the diabetes blue circle as millions mark World Diabetes Day!  The photo on the left is of the Obelisco Plaza Altamira Caracas in Venezuela taken during the campaign in 2007.  Let us know if you spot any near where you are, and send us a photo!

I am finding that there is a lot of what appears to be conflicting advice out there and also a certain amount of ignorance about Diabetes – I think a lot of it is that each individual is affected differently and therefore there is often no 100% ‘right and wrong’ in a lot of cases.

I have placed a new banner on The Beach in Tenerife to promote World Diabetes Day, have a look for it and light the virtual candle by moving the match using your mouse!
